This brief asked to communicate the steps involved to complete a task. I decided to choose a recipe for Lemon Cale. My first initial line of research was to look into existing pictograms and reviewing how well they worked in conveying the action to the target audience.

I initially took apart the recipe and analysed how I could essentially condense the recipe into small bitesized steps and then convey the action within a set of pictograms. I then took each step and began to brainstorm methods on how I would be able to recreate this action through pictograms, by forming 20/25 different methods of showcasing how to “place cake in oven for 30minutes” I was able to differentiate which pictograms were rather clear to understand and those that aren’t functioning as well.

After several iterations I was able to get a finalised set of pictograms which felt rather complete and unified. Once the pictograms were finalised I was then able to concentrate on the final outcome.

As my dad is a professional chef, I spent time trialing and testing methods of which works well within his field. The process of making and cooking is a process that needs the most concentration and easing the process and make it a much more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

The final piece was a UV finish print on a cake tin where those that were involved in the process could concentrate on the process of making and then once ready; turning over the cake tin ready for the final steps of pouring and placing in the oven.
